Press Release – Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2026
Today the Sports to be included in the Programme for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, 2026 have been announced.
As expected, there are only 10 Sports taking part, sadly Shooting has not been included. This will be a big disappointment for all Commonwealth Countries, but particularly for Wales.
Shooting has been included in all but two of the past Games with Welsh Shooting winning medals in all those Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games was originally awarded to Victoria, Australia and shooting events would have been included, had Victoria not withdrawn. Following this withdrawal, a lengthy process took place to find a replacement host. With time running out and a significant compensation payment being made by Victoria, Glasgow was eventually awarded the hosting of the Games in 2026, however with little more than 18 months to organise them, it was always going to be a tall order and it was expected to be a much reduced format.
The last Games, awarded to Birmingham, held in 2022, was also awarded as a result of the original venue withdrawing, that was Durban, South Africa. Birmingham also decided that Shooting would not be included. Gold Coast in 2018 was the last time Shooting was included, with our Sport winning more medals than any other sport for Wales.
To those Sports that have been selected, we wish them well and for a successful medal haul for Wales.
