Today the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has released the news that the Commonwealth Shooting Championships have been cancelled.

Following a review of the 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships scheduled to take place in India, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the event. This comes after careful consideration of several factors, including the continued uncertainty created by the ongoing global pandemic.
The decision was taken by Commonwealth Games India (CGI) Executive Board with the support of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
CGF President Dame Louise Martin DBE said: “We are disappointed that the 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships will no longer take place however, this is the right decision to take in the current climate.
Despite this news, there are numerous key learnings that will benefit our ongoing work as we look to innovate and create new Commonwealth Sport Properties. The Chandigarh 2022 concept has identified exciting opportunities regarding future co-hosting possibilities that we must further explore.
We very much are looking forward to welcoming Team India to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.”

Statement from the WTSF
Whilst this news is disappointing for the athletes that have had selection for the Championships in their sights, the management team recognise that this is an understandable decision given the current pandemic in India.
That’s sad news. It’s such a shame for all the current and upcoming athletes and makes you realise how lucky we were

Chandigarh is a city in India that serves as the capital of the two neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. It is approximately 160 miles north of New Delhi. It was one of the early planned cities in post-independence India and is internationally known for its architecture and urban design.
Background
Following the announcement in January 2018 that shooting would not be included in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and after a number of meetings, India submitted an 84 page proposal to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in January 2020 signalling the intention to run a Commonwealth Shooting Championships.
In February 2020, the CGF announced that they had accepted India’s proposal of hosting the archery and shooting events in India for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but the two sports will be conducted as a separate event called the Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships, which will be hosted in Chandigarh in January 2022. The CGF also confirmed that the medals won in the championships will be counted in the final medal table of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Competition Programme
Full details are not yet known but it is expected that the shooting championships will have the same event programme as the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast with the addition of two of the ISSF Mixed pairs events. The two events have not been specified but they are likely to be Air Rifle and Air Pistol.
Fullbore Rifle is expected to be in the programme, but the location was not stated. India has no Fullbore tradition so it will probably use the range built for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, just south of Delhi, approximately 175 miles from the main activity in Chandigarh.
Funding
India has undertaken to fully fund 358 athletes distributed using the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games entries as a baseline. This funding would include travel, accommodation, transport in India and meals. There will be provision for countries to enter athletes beyond the funded levels at their own cost. The Welsh shooting team at the 2018 Gold Coast games was 11 athletes and five staff.
These numbers will be independent of the CGF national entry cap for Birmingham. Shooting & Archery entries will be in addition.
Entries
Entries will be on the Commonwealth Games rather than CSF basis; in that it will be two athletes per country per event rather than three.

Governance and Operations
Field of play activity will be under the control of ISSF / ICFRA.
The two elements of Birmingham and India will operate entirely independent of each other both operationally and financially. Birmingham will have no involvement whatever in the Shooting or Archery. Medal tables to be combined at end of August 2022.
Time-frame, this is in the hands of Commonwealth Games India from where all information and administration will come. It will, however, follow normal CGF patterns and probably mean entry numbers by October 2021.
