Welsh Airgun Championships 2022

This Year’s Welsh Airgun Championships were held at the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff, from 3rd to 6th November. The championships consisted of several different competitions for Air Rifle and Air Pistol. The competitions were fully inclusive, athletes with a disability of classification SH1 competed against non-disabled athletes. There were also separate competitions for athletes classified SH2 and for SH1 prone.

New programme

The change of the format of the Finals by the ISSF necessitated a change to the programme this year. There is not enough time to run eight finals each day as was done last year.

The new programme introduced a pairs competition which was highly interesting due to a random draw a week before the competition, which was live streamed on social media.

Pistol

Open Championship

Leading the pistol in the men’s qualification round was Igors Aleksandrovs with an excellent score 568, however he was closely followed by James Miller with a score of 567. The standard of shooting was highly competitive which showed as the scores for the top 6 places was only 7 points. The top 8 athletes progress to the Elimination round and it was good to see a junior athlete, Sam Allen made the round with a score of 555.

In the elimination round, the high standards and talent levels continued to show as both James Miller and Kenneth Darling took the top two places in the round and went forward to the gold medal match. Pavelas Voitiukevicius took the bronze medal with a score of 244.8

In the gold medal match, both Darling and Miller battled it out for the top place. Darling came out on top with an excellent display and won the win 16 points to James’s 10.

Again, same as the men the top 6 were only separated by a few points. 5 of the 8 athletes progressing to the Elimination round were juniors, highlighting the current strength of junior air pistol women.

In the elimination round, Charlotte Hicks showed excellent shooting and moved up to the top spot with a score of 242.6 closely followed by Lucy Evans who was only point 3 behind going into the final.

Francine Gilmore also improved her ranking position moving from 6th in the qualification to secure the bronze medal with a score of 238.1.

Going into the women’s final, with the scores from the elimination ending so close, a competitive final was expected, and it did not disappoint. With the scores between Lucy and Charlotte set at 6 each. The final was set to be very close. Lucy however came out on top taking the gold medal with a score of 16 points to Charlotte’s 10 points.

In the mixed team pistol competition, the random draw element meant the athletes could be paired with anyone. The competition was split into junior and senior discipline. The 30-shot qualification score was shot concurrent with the first 30 shots of the Cardiff Grand Prix Competition.

In the senior team’s competition, Kerstin Dodd, and Kenneth Darling (559) managed a 3-point lead over Jess Liddon and Kjetil Knudsen. These teams would then battle it out for the gold medal in the final. The final was won by Dodd and Darling with a score of 16 to Liddon and Knudsen’s 10 points.
