Target Shooting\u00a0and\u00a0GCSE Physical Education<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Target shooting has been included on the approved list of sports and physical activities for the new GCSE Physical Education and Health qualification in Wales, which will be taught for the first time from September 2026. This new qualification has been developed specifically for Wales and places a greater emphasis on practical performance and participation than\u00a0previous\u00a0GCSE Physical Education qualifications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For young people who already\u00a0participate\u00a0in target shooting, this development creates an exciting opportunity to connect their sporting achievements with their educational journey. It also raises awareness of shooting as a recognised sporting activity that develops a wide range of physical,\u00a0technical\u00a0and personal skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is the New GCSE Physical Education and Health Qualification?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The new GCSE Physical Education and Health\u00a0qualification\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0designed to give candidates opportunities to develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills through sport and physical activity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A significant feature of the qualification is that 60% of the overall award is assessed through non-examination assessment (NEA), with\u00a0candidates\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0their practical abilities through approved sports and activities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The qualification will be available for first teaching from September 2026, with the first awards issued in 2028.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shooting Is on the Approved List<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Shooting has been included on\u00a0the official approved list of sports and physical activities\u00a0for the new GCSE Physical Education and Health qualification in Wales. This means that candidates can use shooting as one of their practical assessment activities, provided it is carried out\u00a0in accordance with\u00a0the WJEC assessment requirements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Is the Qualification Structured and Assessed?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Practical Assessment (60%)<\/span><\/b>
\nMost of the qualification is based on practical performance. Pupils will take part in physical activities and\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0their skills as part of their assessment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Written Assessment (40%)<\/span><\/b>
\nPupils will also complete written exams covering topics such as physical education, health and wellbeing, and factors that influence sporting\u00a0performance The\u00a0qualification\u00a0contains\u00a0both practical and theoretical components.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Will the Practical Element Work?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Candidates will be assessed through approved sports and physical activities. Evidence will be gathered through performance in authentic sporting environments and assessed against criteria\u00a0established\u00a0by WJEC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Olympic Disciplines Only<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

For GCSE assessment purposes,\u00a0shooting is limited to recognised Olympic shooting disciplines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates may only be assessed in\u00a0one shooting discipline,\u00a0rather than combining multiple disciplines. This ensures consistency and fairness in assessment. Schools and\u00a0shooting clubs\u00a0will\u00a0determine\u00a0which discipline is most suitable for each candidate’s circumstances and available evidence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assistance\u00a0from Welsh Shooting\u00a0clubs\u00a0can be provided to schools to support learning of the school and the candidate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Will Shooting Be\u00a0Assessed?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The assessment of shooting reflects the same principles applied across all approved sports. Candidates must\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0effective performance in a competitive or appropriately demanding environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These requirements align closely with the skills already developed through participation in target shooting clubs, cadet organisations, scouting groups and other recognised shooting environments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
